progressive metal
  • subgenre of metal
  • complex compositions
  • odd time signatures
  • intricate songplaying
  • often influenced by jazz and classical music
  • pioneered by dream theater, fates warning, and queensryche

what i've noticed

  • deviates anywhere from slightly to heavily from standard music composition, having more than just a verse, a chorus, and a solo.
  • prog musicians are more technical and talented than most other musicians, as their technicality leads to impressive music writing
  • modern prog has a lot of jazz and soft rock influence, as well as influence from the more extreme metal, with growling vocalists and double bass.
  • a traditional prog (double negative) band would be dream theater, a good example song from them would be "constant motion" off of the album of the same name.
  • a more modern prog band would be between the buried and me, and a good example song from them would be "sum of nothing" off the album colors.
  • between the buried and me actually has little to no tradtional song structure, as they rarely return to a riff or a verse, it's usually something new. a good example of this is "prequel to the sequel" off of the album "colors".
